This week Rich Mccue came to class to give us a presentation on Multimedia Learning Theory & Screen casting. We started by taking a quick survey about how we are doing personally/had a mental health check in. I thought that was a very kind thing to consider, and appreciate that our teachers care about about us as people.
We moved into a refresher about multimedia learning, the duel channels of delivering information, the limited capacity of our working memory, and how to integrate active processing. We also discussed Sketchnoting as a tool that can help us remember information by taking visually stimulating notes, which is a tool we also explored in our Multiliteracies class, so it was nice to see some concepts and ideas coming full circle in our studies. Rich introduced us to the educational video resource of Teacher Tube, which I had never heard of! I’m excited to explore it more and use it for finding information.
Together in groups, we edited slides to answer questions about the pros/cons of using videos to assist in learning. Julia, Rhys and I discussed important benefits like:
- Videos are a visual mode of learning that can help reach diverse learning styles and provide more accessibility.
- Learning from videos can have a feeling of being fun! Fun is a really useful and important aspect of being engaged in learning.
And considered some complications of playing videos in the classroom such as:
- Students may zone out from the video if there is no component of active engagement
- Not all videos are engaging, teachers might rely on them too often and it can be just as boring as a lecture
- It can be difficult at times to check the sources of information within video content.
We also discussed the concept of a “flipped classroom” which essentially the design of a classroom that is structured around the idea that lecture or direct instruction is not the best use of class time. I think this structure could be super beneficial, especially in older grades when students are more versed in their subject matter, and feel comfortable having conversations more freely.
Then, I edited my screen cast video from last week to include an interactive question. Screencastify lets you do this through their platform directly on the video you just recorded. at 1:00, the video now stops and prompts a response from the viewer. I asked “Do you think i’ll fail this test”

The correct answer was unfortunately, yes haha.
This is an awesome addition to videos because it stops the viewer to check in and essentially prove that they are watching the video, and to answer questions on the information they have received so for, or to make predictions about the future of the video.
I wasnt able to get the h5p edited interactive question on my video in class, so I went directly through screencastifty, which isnt ideal because of some pricacy issues on where data is stored, but I did use h5p to create this crossword!
